María Marín’s personal experiences are also a source of inspiration. Her mother died of breast cancer when she was 9 years old. At the age of 15, she learned that a new battle awaited her as she was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes (Type 1) and that she would depend on insulin injections for the rest of her life. She is an honorary national spokesperson for the ADA (American Diabetes Association).
