Markus Jakobsson is a security researcher with interests in applied security, ranging from device security to user interfaces. He is one of the main contributors to the understanding of phishing and crimeware, and is currently focusing his efforts on social engineering, human aspects of security and mobile security.
Markus Jakobsson has published a collection of books and over one hundred peer-reviewed conference and journal articles. He holds 50+ patents and more than a hundred pending patents. Markus is a co-founder of four startups, spanning user authentication, mobile malware detection, and secure user messaging.
After Qualcomm acquired FatSkunk, the mobile malware startup Markus Jakobsson founded in 2009, he joined Qualcomm as a Senior Director. In 2016, he joined Agari as Chief Scientist. Agari is a leading email security provider addressing spoofing, business email compromise, and other email-based threats. Jakobsson researches identity deception, email security, malware, authentication, fraud, user interfaces and efficient implementations of security technologies.
Markus Jakobsson is also a founder of ZapFraud which offers identity protection for your email, and blocks fraud; RavenWhite develop anti-fraud technologies relating to authentication; and Extricatus do security consulting.
Markus Jakobsson is also an expert witness in patent litigation trials. He has served as an expert witness in patent litigation cases covering Internet technology, network and computer security, cryptography, encryption and obfuscation.
Markus Jakobsson has consulted for three major international Financial Service Providers, several startups and mid-sized companies, and one government. He reviews and designs technical solutions and user messaging solutions, treating security as a holistic matter where everything practical matters.
Markus Jakobsson enjoys public speaking. He is commonly speaking to the media, and his work has been featured in New York Times, Forbes, BusinessWeek, and many other similar publications. He has given keynotes at conferences, such as MAAWG, Financial Cryptography, USENIX Security, the iCore Summit, BanaMex Foro De Seguridad, and the iCore summit. He has given several invited talks at the US Patent and Trademark Office, and has taught security classes at different levels, on topics ranging from fraud and phishing to cryptographic protocol design.
